Days after German manager Jurgen Klopp announced his exit from Liverpool as coach at the end of the season, FC Barcelona manager, Xavi Hernandez has also announced his decision to step down from his position at the end of the ongoing season on Sunday, January 28.
The Spanish football manager took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm his departure, citing the challenging and “cruel” nature of his role following FC Barcelona’s 3-5 defeat against Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday. “I would like to announce that on June 30th, I will no longer continue as the coach at Barca,” he said in the post-match press conference.
“We have been talking now with the President, with Rafa Yuste, with Alejandro Echevarria, with Deco and with the part of the board. I think the situation deserves a change of course, and as a Barca fan, I cannot allow this situation,” he further added.
The former Barca midfielder addressed that he soes not want to be a problem at the club and rather be a solution, like he was two years ago. “It takes the tension out of the situation and gives the dressing room, the staff and the club a bit of a room to change the dynamic,” he added.
Speaking to give his all in these four months until June 30th, Xavi added, “In these four months, I will give everything. I’ll try to give my all to try and win the league. I still think we can do it.” At the end, he concluded by stating that “the decision is made and it can’t be changed.”
It is to be noted that Xavi took over as coach of FC Barcelona in November 2021. During his reign as coach, he has led the Barca to success last season with a Spanish Super Cup and a league title.
