Former Pakistan World Cup-winning captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan has been hospitalised after being involved in a firing during his rally in Pakistan’s Gujranwala and was rushed to a hospital. He was seen bandaged on his right leg and was moved into an SUV. 

The attacker fired at Imran Khan when the 1992 World Cup winner was giving a speech on a container truck. The firing incident led to chaotic scenes near Imran Khan’s reception camp at Allahwala Chowk in Gujranwala after gunshots were fired. 

The update was reported by the local channel Geo News which says that at least four party leaders were among those injured. Reports also say that one of these leaders is Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Faisal Javed who has also sustained injuries.

Imran Khan is considered one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketers. He led the Men in Green to the 1992 World Cup title and is also regarded as one of the best all-rounders to have played the game. The 70-year-old has played 88 Tests where he scored 3807 runs at an average of 37.69 while picking 362 wickets. 

In One Day Internationals, Khan made 175 appearances and scored 3709 runs and took 182 wickets. Khan was part of the great quartet of all-rounders comprising Kapil Dev, Ian Botham and Richard Hadlee, who ruled cricket from the late 70s to the early 90s. Imran was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 2018 to April 2022. 

He is the founder and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), one of the biggest political parties in the country. This firing has brought back some horrific memories for Pakistan of how former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was shot dead during a rally in 2007, but fortunately for Khan escaped serious injury, according to local news agencies reporting from Wazirabad.
