The brand-new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is just a few days away. The sixteenth edition of IPL gets underway on 31 March with a match between defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium will host the opening fixture of IPL 2023.
All ten teams are geared up for the marquee event. However, this edition of the Indian T20 league will see some marquee players missing the action. While some are down and out with injuries, some have opted out for personal reasons.
Let’s have a look at the names which have been ruled out of IPL 2023.
1. Jasprit Bumrah

The first and the biggest name that will miss the biggest cricketing festival in India is Mumbai Indians’ pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah. The right-arm pacer who has played in every IPL after making his debut in 2013, will miss the entire season this year. Bumrah has been out of cricketing action since September last year and is expected to sit out for another few months. The pacer is recovering from a back injury which has been troubling him for a while now.
2. Shreyas Iyer

The second biggest name which might not be seen in action during IPL 2023 is Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Shreyas Iyer. The Indian batter was ruled out of cricketing action this month after he complained about recurring back pain. Iyer did not come out to bat in the last Test against Australia and missed the three-match ODI series as well. Now, reports have claimed that the batter might miss IPL 2023 and cricketing action beyond that too.
3. Jhye Richardson

The Mumbai Indians’ pacer too has complained about a recurring hamstring injury and might undergo surgery to get rid of that. This means that the Australia pacer will not take part in this year’s IPL. Richardson was a part of the Mumbai Indians’ squad last year too and was retained ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction.

4. Jonny Bairstow

The England batter who has been out of cricketing action for several months now, Jonny Bairstow is set to give IPL 2023 a miss. Although the batter has almost recovered from his freak leg injury which he sustained last year while playing golf, the England Cricket Board (ECB) does not want to take a chance by sending Bairstow to play in a high-intensity league like the IPL. Instead, the wicketkeeper batter is expected to make a comeback with county cricket with the Ashes around the corner.
5. Rishabh Pant

India’s wicketkeeper batter met a horrific accident in December last year and has been out of action since then. Rishabh Pant underwent surgery too. The Delhi Capitals’ captain is yet to recover from his injuries let alone the thoughts of him being back on the cricket field. Therefore, Pant will miss IPL 2023. The DC management has appointed David Warner as the captain of the side but they are yet to identify a wicketkeeper.
6. Will Jacks

The only great buy for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the IPL 2023 mini-auction, Will Jacks was ruled out of IPL 2023 after he sustained an injury. The swashbuckling batter who could also roll his arm over sustained an injury while fielding during England’s ODI series against Bangladesh and hence was ruled out of the tournament.

7. Prasidh Krishna

The lanky Indian pacer who impressed everyone with his raw pace and the ability to hit the right length consistently, Prasidh Krishna recently underwent surgery and hence will miss IPL 2023. Krishna was an integral part of Rajasthan Royals’ bowling lineup. Nevertheless, the Royals seem to have signed up Sandeep Sharma as his replacement. However, an official confirmation is still awaited.
8. Kyle Jamieson

The New Zealand pacer who was once sold for a record-breaking price at the IPL auction was roped in by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the IPL 2023 mini-auction. However, Jamieson also complained about a recurring hamstring injury and hence was ruled out of IPL 2023.
9. Pat Cummins

The Australian white-ball captain who has played for multiple franchises over the years, Par Cummins opted out of IPL 2023 due to personal reasons. He was slated to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the Australian pacer announced his unavailability long ago. Plus, Cummins is still recovering from the big personal loss he incurred when his mother passed away.
