All the confusion and speculation around India's next Test captain is almost over with the BCCI confirming Rohit Sharma's name for the role. A latest report has revealed that the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is not thinking about any other name than Rohit Sharma and the opener is all set to become India's Test captain as well. Also, multiple names including KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are being discussed for the deputy position.

A latest report in InsideSport revealed that Rohit Sharma will officially be appointed as India's new Test captain after the South Africa tour. His deputy's name will also be revealed at that time. “Without any doubt, Rohit Sharma will be the new test captain of India. Rohit was named vice-captain before the South Africa series & will now be elevated as captain of the team. The announcement will be made soon”, a BCCI official was quoted saying by InsideSport. So, it looks certain that Rohit the ODI captain will soon become Rohit the all-format captain of India.

However, as SportsTiger had mentioned, the fitness concerns around Rohit Sharma can go against him. The BCCI official also talked in this regard and said that they will talk to India's ODI captain to work more on his fitness. “The workload will be immense. He needs to keep himself very agile and fit. I think the selectors will have a word with him. He will have to work to extra-bit on his fitness”, said the BCCI official.

Jasprit Bumrah also in contention for vice-captaincy role

The BCCI official further informed that while Rohit Sharma's name for the captaincy role is almost finalized, multiple names are being touted for the vice-captaincy position. KL Rahul, who acted as vice-captain in South Africa series in Rohit's absence, is in contention to take over the vice-captaincy role. However, two more names are being discussed for the role. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and pacer Jasprit Bumrah's names are also being discussed to play Rohit's deputy in the longest format.

“The Vice-Captain will be India’s future leader. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah all are future leaders. The selectors need to groom them in a proper structured manner. Selectors need to make a big choice on who will be made the vice-captain of the Indian test team”, the BCCI official further said.
