Despite it being clear that Virat Kohli will not be the captain in any format of the game in international cricket or even in the Indian Premier League, former India pacer Ajit Agarkar believes that if Kohli can continue to lead Royal Challengers Bangalore at least for the 2022 season, it will be the easiest solution for his franchise.
Notably, Kohli had announced midway through the last season that it will be his last year as the leader of the franchise. While RCB did reach the final four in IPL 2021, they failed to proceed to the final.
“If Virat Kohli can take over the captaincy and if he is happy to do it and if he has the energy to do it, I think that will be the easiest solution for them. At the end of the day, we have seen RCB over the years they haven’t invested enough money in making a proper team of 12, 13 or 14 players with enough depth,” said Agarkar on Star Sports show Game Plan: IPL auction special.
“It’s always been dependent on the top three, not enough middle order players and if you don’t have the money, you can’t do that again. “So, if you break the bank for one player, doesn’t matter how good he is – will win you games but will never win you competitions,” he added.
The IPL mega auction is all set to happen in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. There is a lot of excitement among the fans for the same as the mega auction gives teams to build a team for the next three years and a lot depends on the pool of players available to one’s disposal.
This time around there are ten teams who will sit at the auction table with two new franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Ahmedabad joining the previous eight. The newcomers have been provided three draft picks to allow them a level playing field at the auction table. Ahmedabad have picked Hardik Pandya as their captain along with Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill. Meanwhile, Lucknow have gone ahead with KL Rahul as their skipper with Ravi Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis as his teammates.
