The cricketing world has been sent into a tailspin after Chennai Super Kings announced top-order batter Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain, replacing the legendary MS Dhoni. Reacting to this major development, cricketing great AB de Villiers deemed this decision a massive blunder by the five-time champions.

The CSK captaincy news was unveiled in a subdued fashion as Ruturaj Gaikwad was spotted at the annual picture of all the captains on the eve of the IPL 2024 season opener. Then moments later, Chennai Super Kings released a statement confirming Dhoni officially handed over the captaincy to Gaikwad.

Dhoni stepping down as captain is a huge mistake: ABD

Coming to the first game of the 2024 season between the Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, AB de Villiers deemed Chennai's decision as a mistake. Speaking on Jio Cinema's pre-match show, the former RCB man opined, " I will be honest. I feel MS Dhoni stepping down as captain is a huge mistake."

Nothing much to worry:  Ruturaj Gaikwad on being CSK captain

Reacting to being the Chennai Super Kings captain, Ruturaj  Gaikwad expressed that this role won't be a huge worry for him as senior members of the team are there to guide him. In a video released by the CSK social media accounts, Gaikwad said, " It feels good. It's a privilege obviously. I feel more than that. It's a huge responsibility but I'm really excited because of the kind of group we have."

"Everyone's experienced enough, so not much to do for me. Plus, I have Mahi (Dhoni) bhai in the team, Jaddu (Jadeja) bhai as well, Ajju (Rahane) bhai as well, who's been a great captain, to guide me. Nothing much to worry, just looking forward to enjoy it," he continued.
