On Sunday, November 24, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul put up a comprehensive lead in the first Test, underway at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The Indian opening pair added 29 runs to their overnight score of 172/0 before Australia got their first breakthrough as Mitchell Starc dismissed KL Rahul (77). 

While Jaiswal went upto score his fourth Test century, after a forgettable outing in the first innings where he was dismissed for an eight-ball duck. Although it was Jaiswal’s fourth Test century, he also became the joint second Indian batter, alongside Vinod Kambli and Sunil Gavaskar to score a Test ton before turning 23. 

Not only this, the 22-year-old also became the joint second batter to score most Test centuries in a calendar year before turning 23, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar (1992) and Ravi Shastri (1984). He sits next to Sunil Gavaskar (1971) and Vinod Kambli (1993), both of whom have scored four Test tons in a calendar year before turning 23.

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal become third opening pair to register highest opening partnership in SENA from India

While Yashasvi Jasiwal went upt to score 161 runs off 297 deliveries during his stay in the middle, with his innings laced with 15 boundaries and three sixes, KL Rahul posted a 176-ball 77. With their 200-plus run partnership at the top of the order, Jaiswal0KL pair became just the third from India to register highest opening stand in SENA countries. Moreover, the opening pair also became the fifth to stitch 200-plus run stand in Australia among the visiting teams. 

Speaking of the match, at Lunch on Day 3 of the first Test, India had posted 275/1 in 84 overs with Jaiswal (141 off 264) and Devdutt Padikkal (25 off 70) in the middle. The visitors had posted 321-run lead going into lunch, adding 103 runs in the opening session on Day 3.
