Pakistan captain, Babar Azam took to social media to announce his decision to step down as the leader of the pack post team's ODI World Cup debacle. The Pakistan batter took to Instagram, informing the fans and cricket enthusiasts on his decision.
“I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from the PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world,” he began.
Babar Azam, who reached the top ranked batter in the 50-over format of the game and also led his team to the top spot in the ICC Team Rankings, also extended his gratitude to the players, support staff and others while announcing his decision to step down from captaincy.
“Today, I am stepping sown as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call,” he said. However, the 29-year-old asserted that he will continue to play for the side across formats and ill fully and completely support the new skipper.
It is to be noted that Pakistan finished fifth in the ODI World Cup 2023 after registering only four wins from nine games. However, Pakistan virtually were knocked out after New Zealand beat Sri Lanka in their last league fixture, their exit was confirmed when they suffered a 93-run loss at the hands of England.
