The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named a 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, just a day after they announced Shakib Al Hasan as their skipper for the 50-over Asia Cup and the World Cup. It is to be noted that while the Asia Cup is set to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka from 30th August to 17th September, the ODI World Cup 2023 is set to take place in October - November in India.

In the 17-member squad, Bangladesh have called upon youngsters Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Shamim Hossain Patwary. The two batters were a part of Bangladesh’s U19 side that lifted the World Cup 2020. While Shamim is said to have played 17 T20Is for the Bangla Tigers, Tamim is yet to make his international debut.

Shakib Al Hasan, who was the frontrunner to take the ODI captaincy after Tamim Iqbal stepped down has been named the skipper of the side. While the news around Shakib taking the charge in the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup was confirmed by BCB Chairman Najmul Hasan Papon a day earlier in a press conference, he further added that there was never a confusion on the same.

“There was never any confusion. I told you before. He is the obvious choice. Who can lead? But we had a talk to him before appointing him. Nobody should think anything else. Shakib is the captain. He was always the main choice,” Papon said.
