In a now-deleted message, Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes vented his anger on a fan account in response to what he took to be criticism after his team's defeat by Manchester City. Guimaraes began playing with the Magpies in January 2022, and he is currently in his third season at St James' Park overall. During his time at the club, the midfielder has witnessed the team improve year after year.
They really improved significantly from their 11th-place performance in Guimaraes' debut season, when they finished fourth in the 2022-23 season and qualified for the Champions League. They defeated Aston Villa convincingly 5-1 to start the current campaign before falling to eventual champions Manchester City by a razor-thin 1-0 margin.
After the defeat, a Newcastle fan account posted a picture of Guimaraes with Joelinton, Dan Burn, and Miguel Almiron, along with the question: "Is it too early in the season to start focusing blame onto individual players? Was there an overreaction to the loss to Man City?”
In his criticism of certain supporters' short-term memories following his team's stellar performance last season, Guimaraes seemed to believe that either the post or the comments to it were criticising him and his teammates.
He replied to the tweet with, “Is this serious? We are in champions league football, we lost against maybe one of the best teams in the world and we have a big win and lost one game! Support in the best moment is easy! Short stupid memories you all have 🤮look what we have done for the team this 1 year and half”.
The page that tweeted the original post apologised and stated they were trying to be supportive, while also deleting their post. The account wrote, “We are with you, Bruno, this post was a way to try and focus on the craziness of those trying to find players to blame after two games. “I’m sorry if this was not expressed on that matter.”
Guimaraes is reportedly in contract negotiations with Newcastle for a better, longer-term agreement, although he has acknowledged that there is "doubt" while they are ongoing. Newcastle will next face Liverpool on Sunday night at their home, St James Park. Howe will be eager to repair the mistakes committed against City. Liverpool, however, are coming off a stellar 3-1 win against Bournemouth.
