After Argentina's historic win, Congress MP Abdul Khaleque took to Twitter to congratulate Lionel Messi for the World Cup win and then praised the 35-year-old footballer for his "Assam connection".
"Congratulations from the core of heart. We are proud of you for your Assam connection," Congress MP Abdul Khaleque tweeted.
However, a confused Twitter user questioned the MP regarding Messi's Assam connection.
"Assam connection?" the user tweeted.
The Congress leader then replied, "Yes, he was born in Assam."
The tweet soon went viral and led to hilarious meme fest.
One user sarcastically claimed that Messi is from Maharashtra. Another user said that the World Cup winner is actually from Punjab and his name is Meninder Singh - Messi Paaji.
After heavy trolling, the MP deleted the tweet and requested people to check his social media handles before spreading rumours.
