FIFA World Cup 2022 is all set to be hosted in Qatar from 19 November. The preparations are already underway for the mega event. Teams have short-listed players who will be travelling to the Middle East and representing them. Many would be travelling with their families for the month-long event. Meanwhile, Denmark have decided against it. The European country has decided that its players won’t be travelling with their families to Qatar in human rights protest.
According to reports, Denmark is against the rules in place in the Middle-Eastern country and hence want to contribute little to boost their economy. DBU communications manager Jakob Hoyer has said that the board has decided that the wives and girlfriends of players won’t be travelling to Qatar for the finals like they did in the last edition of the tournament.
“We don’t want to contribute to creating profit for Qatar,” said Jakob. “Therefore, we have throttled down as much as possible on our travel activities. In previous (World Cup finals), the players’ wives and girlfriends have travelled with the board, but as I said, we have cancelled those trips for (these finals).”
Notably, Qatar has faced intense criticism from human rights groups and media over its treatment of migrant workers. A Guardian newspaper analysis in Feb. 2021 concluded 6,500 South Asian migrants had died in Qatar since 2010 and the International Labour Organisation has said Qatar is not adequately reporting worker deaths.
Meanwhile, this is Denmark’s second attempt to protest against the rules in place in Qatar. Earlier, the kit sponsors of the country’s football team, Hummel have come up with a unique jersey for the nation to honour the migrant workers of the host nation Qatar, where some workers also lost their lives while working in the stadiums' construction work.
