On Sunday, March 23, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by four wickets with five balls to spare in their first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After restricting MI for 155/9 in the allotted overs, CSK chased down the target with relative comfort the total despite a hiccup in the latter stages of the innings as Rachin Ravindra scored a measured fifty at the top of the order, staying unbeaten at the crease alongside MS Dhoni.
Notably, after winning the toss, Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of CSK, chose to field, and his decision paid dividends as Khaleel Ahmed struck twice in the power play stage, including the key wicket of Rohit Sharma for zero. The middle overs belonged to the CSK spinners as they not only stifled the MI innings, but also picked up wickets in quick succession with Noor Ahmed being the best bowler of the bunch, registering figures of 4/18 in his four-over spell, to keep the visitors to a below par total.
In the run chase, CSK lost the early wicket of Rahul Tripathi, but then Ruturaj Gaikwad played an excellent innings, laced with six fours and three maximums, reaching 53 runs in just 26 balls. Vignesh Puthur on his IPL debut for MI picked up three wickets with his left-arm wrist spin, but ultimately, Rachin Ravindra scored an unbeaten 65 off 45 with two fours and four maximums, to take CSK over the line for a big win.

The second match for CSK in their IPL 2025 campaign will be against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at home on Friday, March 28, while MI will play at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai for the first-time this season against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday, March 31.
