Former Uruguayan footballer Diego Forlan made his debut in professional tennis after six years of his retirement from international football. Forlan played his first match on the tennis circuit in doubles during the Uruguay Open along with Argentina’s Federico Cori on Wednesday, November 14. However, the duo suffered a 6-1, 6-2 defeat against the Bolivian pair of Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos. 

Diego Forlan couldn’t find the momentum playing his first professional tennis match at the age of 45 years in front of his home fans. However, Forlan has also played tennis at junior level before his 20-year-old from 1997 to 2018 including club and international football. He got an huge support from the home crowd, and also posed with the fans after the match. Forlan was also seen making his debut in the ITF Masters Tour in 2023.

Although Diego Forlan suffered a defeat in his pro tennis debut, the former footballer was happy and enjoyed playing the game. "I enjoyed it quite a lot. I knew that the possibility of it being a difficult game for us was very high. I was happy. It's not easy at all. I played an exhibition in 2017 and 2018 and I didn't have the experience of today," Forlan was quoted as saying by India Today.

Talking about his football career, Diego Forlan is regarded as one of the best footballers of his time. He has played 112 matches for Uruguay, scoring 36 goals. Apart from that, Forlan has scored 222 goals from 525 matches in his club career. He is the third highest goal scorer of all-time for Uruguay behind Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.
