There was an outpour of emotions on social media as Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri donned his national jersey for the last time ever on Thursday, June 6. The Blue Tigers took on Kuwait in their FIFA World Cup Qualifier group game at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. Chhetri, the long-serving national team captain announced his decision last month via a nine-minute long video.
In his video, Chhetri looked back at his two-decade long career and said, "I never thought individually these are the games I've played for the country, this is what I've done good, I've done bad. But, now I did it, this last one-and-a-half two months. It felt very strange.” In March 2024, Chhetri made his 150th appearance for the side when India clashed against Guwahati and came up with India’s sole goal in their 1-2 defeat.
As he played his last game on Thursday, fans took to social media to send their best wishes to him.
