Virat Kohli, the former Indian captain, played his 300th ODI of his illustrious career versus New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, March 2, during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. While his performance with the bat wasn’t much to speak about, his fielding exploits were a factor in helping India win the match against New Zealand by 44 runs, to finish in first place in Group A of the tournament, to make the semi-finals stage.
In Dubai, Virat Kohli became the seventh Indian player to participate in 300 ODIs or more after the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, and Mohammad Azharuddin. After debuting on August 18, 2008, in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Dambulla, Virat Kohli has become one of the most dominating performances in the format, scoring 14096 runs at an average of 58.00 and a strike-rate of 93.40, with 51 hundreds and 73 fifties.

50th ODI (vs South Africa, 2011)
The 50th ODI appearance for Virat Kohli was quite a forgettable one against South Africa in the ODI World Cup 2011 clash in Nagpur on March 12, scoring just one run in three balls before losing his wicket to left-arm spinner Robin Peterson. He did take a key catch of his close friend AB de Villiers during the match, but ultimately, India weren’t able to defend 296 runs against South Africa, although they did manage to win the whole thing in a few weeks time.
100th ODI (vs West Indies, 2013)
On June 11, 2013, during the ICC Champions Trophy clash against West Indies at The Oval in London, Virat Kohli scored a fluent 22 in just 18 balls before Sunil Narine castled him in his 100th ODI appearance. Earlier in the match, he bowled four overs at a reasonable economy rate, to play some role in restricting West Indies to 233/9, a total which was chased down easily by India.
150th ODI (vs England, 2015)
During a tri-series, which also involved Australia, Virat Kohli played in his 150th ODI against England on January 30, 2015, at the WACA in Perth, scoring just eight runs in 26 balls before Moeen Ali dismissed him. After India huffed and puffed their way to 200-run total, England had to battle hard to chase the runs down, but it ultimately was a good day’s work for them in the field.
200th ODI (vs New Zealand, 2017)
In his 200th ODI, on October 22, 2017, Virat Kohli smashed a fantastic captain’s hundred, the 31st of his career in the 50-overs format, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, but the Indian cricket team ended up on the losing side. The bowling lineup of India didn’t step up to the plate as they conceded the 280-run total with an over to spare as Tom Latham struck a hundred in the run chase.
250th ODI (vs Australia, 2020)
The 250th appearance in ODI cricket for Virat Kohli came on November 29, 2020, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), where he batted exceptionally well for India in pursuit of the daunting target of 390 runs set by Australia. Despite the captain’s knock of 89 runs in 87 balls, the Indian cricket team fell short of the target by 51 runs.
300th ODI (vs New Zealand, 2025)
It took Virat Kohli more than four years to play 50 ODI matches, which allowed him to take part in his 300th appaeance in the format against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He lost his wicket to a wonderful catch from Glenn Phillips on the bowling of Matt Henry for 11 runs in 14 balls, but the work in the field from him allowed India to register a comfortable victory in the end.
