Held in the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 12, The Game Awards announced winners for 30 categories. Astrobot won the highly anticipated “Game of the Year” award over the blockbuster games like Black Myth: Wukong and Elder Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. Now the director of Black Myth: Wukong producer and Game Science CEO Feng Ji, criticized the selection in a social media post.
Feng Ji’s Weibo post translation, “The games nominated this year were all exceptional, but honestly, I still can't figure out what the criteria were for Game of the Year. I feel like I came all the way here for nothing! Since last night, I've seen a lot of strong dissatisfaction and frustration in players' comments - often expressed humorously or ironically, which made me laugh," the producer continued. I completely understand these feelings and share the frustration, because behind these emotions lies not pain or malice, but dignity and confidence.
Additionally, Feng Ji also said that he wrote the speech for the acceptance of the “The Game of the Year” award two years ago. However, Black Myth: Wukong did not go empty-handed. The game won two awards at The Game Awards, including Best Action Game and Best Players Voice. Wukong was nominated in five categories, including Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Action Game, and Best Player’s Voice.
Released on 20 August 2024, Black Myth: Wukong became one of the most popular games worldwide quickly. The game sold over 20 million copies in the first month of release, becoming one of the fastest-selling games of all time. The game is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West and follows a monkey character inspired by Sun Wukong from the story.
