Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), refused to take credit for the two Indian Premier League (IPL) titles that the franchise won under his captaincy in 2012 and 2014. Instead, the 42-year-old stated that it was KKR, who made him a successful leader during his illustrious tenure with the franchise from 2011 to 2017.
The former ODI and T20I World Cup winner for India, Gautam Gambhir, led Kolkata Knight Riders for 122 matches, winning 69, and losing 51, while two other matches were tied and N/R. He took KKR to five playoffs in seven IPL seasons, which included two victories in the final, apart from an appearance in the Champions League T20 final in 2014. On Monday, March 18, while speaking at the KKR Knight Club promotional event in Kolkata, Gautam Gambhir stated, “I didn’t make KKR successful, it was KKR that made me a successful leader,” before adding, “I can assure you that whenever I leave this place (KKR), we will be in a much better position.”
Moreover, when Gautam Gambhir was announced as the new mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders recently, his statement read, “I am not an emotional person, and not many things move me. But this is different. This is back to where it all started. Today, there is a lump in my throat and fire in my heart as I think about slipping into that purple and gold jersey once again.”
In his mentor role, Gautam Gambhir will be pairing up with one of the most successful domestic coaches Chandrakant Pandit, who took up the head coach job of Kolkata Knight Riders last season. Notably, KKR finished in seventh place in the IPL 2023 points table, winning only six out of 14 matches in the entire season.
