After the successful conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to host the Women’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in October 2024 in Bangladesh. But seeing the situations in the Asian country which even saw Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina step down from the post and fly out of the nation, the ICC is now mulling to move the tournament out of Bangladesh.

However, the ICC has time and again stated that they have been monitoring the situation in Bangladesh amid the ongoing political unrest, in the latest development, the international body is now looking into back-up options as venues to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be played between 3 to 20th October.

“The ICC has an independent security monitoring system across all its member nations. The situation is being monitored closely but with seven weeks left for the tournament to begin, it will be too early to comment whether the tournament will be shifted from Bangladesh,” an ICC board member told PTI on the conditions of anonymity.

India, UAE, Sri Lanka likely to host Women’s T20 World Cup amid political unrest in Bangladesh

If the tournament is moved out of Bangladesh, India could be one of the possible hosts of the tournament, along with UAE and Sri Lanka. An ICC member also compared this situation with the conditions that occurred in Sri Lanka in March 2022. Although, despite the unrest in Sri Lanka, the side hosted Australia in a bilateral series in June 2022.

Moreover, a report published by Cricbuzz stated that ICC would be looking to host in any country that has favourable weather conditions if the situations should not change in Bangladesh. “All places with favourable weather will be in the mix if it becomes clear that we can’t play in Bangladesh. That may or may not be the case,” an ICC member who is a part of these developments was quoted by Cricbuzz.
