Ashwin found his way into the squad as he replaced fellow finger-spinner Axar Patel, who got injured in the Asia Cup 2023. Playing against Bangladesh in Colombo on September 15, Patel picked up a left quadriceps strain and hasn't recovered yet. The Gujarat native was part of India's 17-man provisional squad but with him needing around three more weeks to recover, Patel couldn't solidify his place for the World Cup.
With Axar Patel's looming injury, Ashwin ended up playing two of the three ODIs against Australia in India. The veteran spinner took his opportunity to make a return in the format by picking up four wickets across two matches. His performance was a spell of 3 for 41 in the second ODI in Indore and dismissed the likes of David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne .
