Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has decided to call it quits on his football career. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 45-year-old Italian footballer, fondly known as Gigi, has decided to draw curtains after a glorious career spanning over more than 20 years. However, the official confirmation is still awaited, and is expected to be out in next few days. Buffon spent his 2022-2023 season with Italian Serie B club Parma Calcio.
Buffon's contract with Parma was supposed to last till 2024; however, his regular injuries and club's failure to get promoted to Serie A can be considered as major reasons for his sudden decision of retirement. The Carrara-born footballer suffered a major hamstring injury in the last season and was out of the action for three months.
Not only this, his club, Parma, finished at fourth in the season with a 17-10 11 record in the Serie B. If reports are to be believed, the Italian turned down a lucrative offer that he received to join the Saudi Pro League this summer.
Buffon started his career with Parma during the 1998-99 season, when he was just 20 years old and spent three years at the club before he moved to Juventus during the 2001-02 season. He spent 19 years with the club before joining the Ligue 1 side PSG in 2018-19. However, after spending one season with the club, he returned to Juventus in 2019-21, before finally moving to Parma for the last few years of his career.
