Italy and Turkey have officially submitted a joint bid to host the UEFA European Championship in 2032, UEFA announced. The two countries have requested to merge their individual bids into one, in order to increase their chances of winning the hosting rights.

Italy and Turkey are the only bidders for Euro 2032, as the other potential candidates have opted to focus on Euro 2028. The United Kingdom and Ireland have formed a five-nation bid for the 2028 edition. Turkey has also submitted a bid for Euro 2028, but it is expected to g to the UK and Ireland.

UEFA said in a statement, “UEFA confirms that it has received today a request from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to merge their individual bids into one joint bid to host UEFA EURO 2032. UEFA will now work with FIGC and TFF to ensure that the documentation to be submitted for their joint bid is compliant with the bidding requirements.”

The two countries have a long history of cooperation and friendship, as well as a common passion for football. They have also hosted several major sporting events in the past, such as the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, and the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final in Rome. Italy have hosted the Euros twice, in 1968 and in 1980.

The final decision is yet to be made and will be made after proper assessment of the bid but it is looking likely that Italy and Turkey will host the tournament. Decisions on venues and match schedules will be also made at a later stage.
