Jannik Sinner was given a custom Toronto Blue Jays jersey at the end of his press conference, post his win against Alex de Minaur. The jersey was a custom-made Toronto Blue Jays kit with the number 23 printed on the back, along with the name “Sinner”. The seventh-seed pulled together a string of impressive performances as he dominated the Canadian Open and cemented himself in the history books.
The Italian was given the jersey after the press conference from a member from the audience. The Italian faced Australian Alex de Minaur in the grand final of the National Bank Open and won 6-4, 6-1. The seventh-seed dominated the unseeded de Minaur and was comfortably on the front foot for the majority of the game. The win was closed out in 90 minutes, with Sinner becoming the second Italian to win the 1000 title.
Sinner said, "Every opponent here is tough to play against. I felt the pressure, but I think I handled it very well." It is his second ATP tour title of the season. Becoming the first Italian to make it to the National Bank Open’s grand final since the tournament became an Open, Sinner improved his head-to-head record against de Minaur to 5-0. This meant he jumped up 2 spots to a career best rank of no. 6 in the world.
De Minaur says he “will be back”
Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur, despite losing, said that he was pleased with the experience overall and was satisfied with the level of tennis he was able to pull out.
He said, “It was a breakthrough week for me. I had a nice week here in Toronto. I played some great tennis and it gave me a taste of it. My maiden final and I will be back."
He won USD 557,000 for finishing as a runner-up while Sinner took home USD 1.02 million of the nearly $7.7 million overall prize pool.
