With the French Open 2024 being the next major in tennis, World No. 5 ranked player, Jesssica Pegula has pulled out of the clay court event. The decision from the American tennis player comes as she continues to focus on her recovery from injuries. Moreover, the third Grand Slam event will be played from May 20 till June 9 in the French capital, Paris.
The 30-year-old earlier also reiterated that she was unsure of her participation in Paris after an injury derailed her campaign. The American last competed in the Billie Jean King Cup in April after missing the Middle East swing in February due to neck issue.
“Unfortunately pulling out of Roland Garros this year,” Pegula said in a post on Instagram. “I’m just about back to practicing normal haven’t had any issues for weeks… If I had another 5-7 days I would have been there 100%,” she further added.
“So I will definitely be back for a full grass season and the rest of the summer and grinding out the rest of the year. Gotta get that match count up,” she added.
Pegula, who featured in the 2023 French Open, made an exit from the tournament after the third round due to an injury. However, the injury was defined, it led to her missing the Rome, Stuttgart and Madrid events.
French Open 2024 main draw announced; Nadal to face Zverev in Round 1
Roland Garros announced the main draws for the upcoming clay court major tournament. In a surprising turn of events, 14-time champion Rafael Nadal has been handed a tough draw with him seeing World No. 4 Alexander Zverev in Round 1 of the men’s singles.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic will open his campaign against veteran French player Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Furthermore, India’s Sumit Nagal, who earned a direct entry to the main draw, will face 12th seeded Karen Khachanov in men’s singles R1.
