Premier League 2024-25 table-toppers, Manchester City have received a major blow as the side is expected to miss the services of midfielder Rodri for the remainder of the season. The City midfielder, who featured in side’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, has reportedly sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee.
Although Rodri is set to undergo some tests in the coming days, but as reported by ESPN, the signs point toward a serious injury with Rodri likely to undergo a surgery in Barcelona. The 28-year-old, who is the leading contender to win the Ballon d’Or after helping Spain to win the Euro 2024 title, if undergoes a surgery, will miss nine months of action.
Rodri to miss remainder of Premier League season with ACL injury
Rodri was forced to walk off with a serious injury in just 21 minutes into the game. He clutched to his right leg during a corner sequence for the defending champions, forcing him walk off the pitch with viable distress and Mateo Kovacic replacing him in the side. Speaking after playing a draw with the Gunners, City manager, Pep Guardiola said, “Rodri is strong. He leaves the pitch in this action because he felt something, otherwise Rodri stays there.”
“He’s the best holding midfielder in the world, he is a potential Ballon d’Or winner. I would love for him to win (the Ballon d’Or),” Pep added. While Rodri’s injury comes as a major setback for the Citizens as they pursue their fifth consecutive Premier League title. However, an official update on Rodri’s injury is still awaited with him scheduled to undergo tests in the coming days.
City to face Watford in Carabao Cup; to take on Newcastle United in next EPL clash
The Premier League table-toppers, Manchester City will next face Watford in the third round of Carabao Cup on September 24, whereas they will next take on Newcastle United in the week six of Premier League 2024-25 on September 28 at the St James Park in Newcastle. They are yet to face Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester United in a long season ahead.
