It has now been reported that Manchester United is looking to replace current goalkeeper Andre Onana next season with French shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier. Lucas, who plays in the French Ligue 1 for LOSC Lille, has played 40 games across all competitions for the French outfit, maintaining 11 total clean sheets. This includes an impressive clean sheet against Spanish giants Real Madrid in the Champions League, when Lille defeated them 1-0 at home during the competition’s group stage fixtures. The 23 year-old has risen through the youth ranks at Lille and has now established himself as their first-choice goalkeeper.
While Lucas Chevalier is yet to make his debut with the senior French national team, he has previously played for the France U-23 team under Thierry Henry. He has been included in France’s squad for the upcoming international break but will most likely play second-fiddle to Mike Maignan. The news does not come off as an absolute surprise as Andre Onana has always been under some criticism ever since he arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2023.
Not the only big transfer decision that Ruben Amorim could take
Although known for being good with the ball at his feet, Onana’s shot-stopping abilities have always been under scrutiny by fans and pundits alike. He had a big void to fill when he came into the club after the departure of fan favorite David De Gea, but he has not delivered as per the expectations. In the current season, he has played 38 games, registering just 8 clean sheets altogether.
This decision could be one of the many big transfer calls that Ruben Amorim will take in the upcoming summer transfer window as he will look to enter his first full season in charge of the Red Devils with a squad that he has chosen and can execute his ideas. He was brought in as the manager of United in the middle of the season after the sacking of Erik Ten Hag, and has since then not been able to produce the best of results for the Manchester side.
