The IPL 2024 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) saw the reigning champions come out on top with five-wicket margin and continue to be in the playoffs hunt. After winning the toss, the RR skipper Sanju Samson elected to bat first. On the back of an unbeaten 47-run knock from Riyan Parag, the RR posted 141 runs on the board.
However, the 142-run target was chased comfortably by the reigning champions in 18.2 overs. Led on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 42, the CSK comfortably chased the total on their home turf and jump to the third place in the IPL 2024 standings. But what caught the eyeballs in the match was Ravindra Jadeja’s controversial dismissal, where he was dismissed ‘Obstructing the field’.
While it triggered some debate, the two senior members of the team management finally broke silence on this dismissal. “That’s the exciting thing for us; we’ve got some really good talents. He hasn’t been able to get the opportunities because we have so many good bowlers up-front. So happy for him to get the opportunity, and he has shown how good he is. He has been training hard, and he has been excellent whenever he has got the chance,” CSK batting coach Michael Hussey said.
As per the rules, law 37.1 of the MCC states, “Either batter is out obstructing the field if, while the ball is in play, they wilfully attempt to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.”
Had Jadeja run straight, it wouldn’t have been a problem: Kumar Sangakkara
Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara also spoke about Ravindra Jadeja’s controversial dismissal. S angakkara added that it is how the law works. “The law says that if a batter changes his direction and gets in the way of the throw, it is considered an obstruction. The rule was changed for the same reason a few years back,” he said.
“Even if you are (running) in the middle, and if the ball hits your body, it’s considered out. Had he (Jadeja) run straight on the side where he stopped, it wouldn’t have been a problem at all.”
