Sumit Nagal, who created history by becoming the first-ever tennis player from India to clinch the main draw game at the prestigious clay court event Monte Carlo Masters, will be up against Denmark’s Holger Rune in the round of 32 clash. He progressed to the stage after beating Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in the round of 64.
The unseeded 93rd-ranked Indian was up against the World No.38 Arnaldi, over whom he registered the historic triumph by 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 37 minutes. This was Nagal’s third victory over a top-500 player and with this win, he also became the first Indian after 1990 to win an ATP Masters 1000 match on the clay.
Nagal started the clay court campaign with a win over Flavio Cobolli by 6-2, 6-3 in qualifiers followed by a remarkable victory by 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 against Facundo Diaz Acosta. The Haryana-based player will face seventh-seeded and last year’s runner-up Rune on April 10.
