The IPL 2024 opener saw Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings extend their win record over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to 8-1 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, Mustafizur Rahman was the pick of the bowlers, Rachin Ravindra, along with Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja did a bit with the bat to help side get over the line.
While MS Dhoni was seen moving with his brisk stumping, the veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batter did not get a chance to take the field with the bat as Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja’s quickfire knocks guided the team home. But as it was the first match of Gaikwad as captain, there were several remarks on MS Dhoni’s future in the tournament, knowing that he is no more the captain of the side.
Speaking on MS Dhoni’s future in the tournament, former West Indies great Chris Gayle said, “He (MS Dhoni) might not play all games. There may be a little break in between for him, that’s why the decision. But MSD will go well, don’t worry about that.”
It is to be noted that Chris Gayle is part of the IPL 2024 commentary panel with JioCinema.
Never felt it as an additional pressure: Ruturaj Gaikwad on captaining CSK
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lauded the team’s all-round effort to help get to a winning start in the tournament. Speaking after CSK’s six-wicket win over RCB in Chennai, Gaikwad also spoke of captaining the side for the first time in IPL.
“I’ve always enjoyed it (captaincy), never felt it as an additional pressure. I had experience on how to handle it, never felt any pressure, obviously had Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai as well.”
The Chennai Super Kings will next take on Gujarat Titans on March 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
