Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has made an appeal to the Indian government to install an in-vogue ‘Mondotrack’ at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. The silver-medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics came up with an additional plea in a meeting to discuss the draft National Sports Governance Bill on Wednesday, October 23.

Mondotrack is a surface which is made of vulcanized rubber, absorbs shock and reduces fatigue with its elasticity and uniform dynamic response. It is used for track events which enhance the player’s performance and also reduce the chance of an injury. The track was used for the events in the 2024 Paris Olympics and Diamond League finals. Several international players were impressed with this track.

Neeraj Chopra insist more stadiums at grassroot level in India

According to the report by News18, a source who was present in a meeting between Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and elite players and coaches revealed that Neeraj Chopra insisted on more stadiums at grassroot level. The two-time Olympic medalist also also urged the central government to install Mondotrack at NIS, Patiala, which is a National Centre of Excellence.

“Neeraj attended the discussion virtually and said that he had been speaking about a Mondotrack at Patiala since 2018-19…facilities at the grassroots was another thing. He said that when Indian athletes compete abroad, most of the competitions these days are held on the Mondotrack, which becomes a big disadvantage for them,” the source was quoted as saying.
