Indian Olympian and quarter-miler Nirmala Sheoran has been handed eight-year ban by the National Anti-Doping Agency’s (NADA) Disciplinary Panel for a doping violation. The 28-year-old has tested positive for a banned substance in a test which was conducted last year.
The Indian athlete had returned to competition at the National Inter-State Championships in June last year in Bhuvneshwar after she served a four-year ban in a doping offense in 2018. But recently, in a statement from the NADA on Thursday, February 8 revealed that the athlete will serve an eight-year ban, starting from August 7, 2023.
Furthermore, the report reveals that Sheoran has tested positive for “Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) and Testosterone (T)”. A source of the athletics team informed the PTI stating, “Yes, the athlete in question is Nirmala Sheoran. She (Nirmala on the NADA website) is the same athlete (as Nirmala Sheoran). It’s an out-of-competition test and her sample was taken in Jaipur.”
S peaking further of Nirmala Sheoran, the top quarter-miler had won a gold in women’s 400m in the 2017 Aian Championships in Bhuvneshwar. But her doping offence in 2018 resulted in her stripping off the medal. The athlete also participated at the 2016 Rio Olympics in 400 and women’s 4x400m relay. However, at this moment it remains unknown if the athlete will aim to overturn her ban, raising an appeal.
