India showed a dominant batting performance on day three of the ongoing first Test at M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After taking a lead of 227 runs in the first innings, India declared their second innings on 287/4 and set a target of 515 runs for Bangladesh to win the first Test. For India, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant scored centuries with Gill being the top scorer of the second innings. The 25-year-old brought up his fifth Test hundred and 12th overall in international cricket.
After getting out on a duck in the first innings, Shubman Gill came to bat after India lost their first wicket at the score of 15 runs in the form of skipper Rohit Sharma. After a few overs, India were reduced to 67/3, before Rishabh Pant joined Shubman Gill at the crease. The duo put up a partnership of 167 runs for the fourth wicket where Pant got out after scoring 109(128) runs with 13 fours and four sixes. On the other hand, Gill remained unbeaten on 119*(176) runs with the help of 10 fours and four sixes before Rohit Sharma decided to call off the Indian innings.
Bangladesh lose 4 wickets on day three, need 357 runs to win
India have put themselves in a stronger position in the first Test against Bangladesh. Coming to chase a target of 515 runs, Bangladesh got a good start as they added 62 runs for the first wicket in 16.2 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal took a blinder at slips on Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery to dismiss Zakir Hasan on 33(47) runs. After a few overs, Ravichandran Ashwin struck with the ball to dismiss Shadman Islam (35 off 68) at the score of 86.
Bangladesh were 158/4 in 37.2 overs before the umpire decided to call off day three due to bad lights. For Bangladesh, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto played a captain’s knock and is unbeaten on 51*(60) runs with four fours and three sixes. Now Bangladesh need 357 runs to win the first Test and take a lead of 1-0 in a two-match series. For India, Ravichandran Ashwin has taken three wickets in the second innings so far while Jasprit Bumrah put one in his bag.
