The Champions Trophy has produced some extraordinary figures in its 27 years of rich history. The status as an ICC tournament makes it one of the distinguished cricketing competitions, which drives players to showcase their mettle and etch their names in record books. Back in 2013, when India lifted the coveted trophy for the second time under MS Dhoni's captaincy, Shikhar Dhawan displayed his batting prowess and concluded the competition as the player of the tournament for notching up the most runs in the competition.

Just like Shikhar Dhawan, some other names also became the recipient of the prestigious ICC award, and in this article, SportsTiger discusses the winner of every player of the tournament award in the Champions Trophy history.

Champions Trophy 1998: Jacques Kallis

South Africa won their maiden ICC title with their Champions Trophy (then known as the Knockout Trophy) 1998 victory after beating the West Indies in the final played in Dhaka. Jacques Kallis played an instrumental role in the Protea side’s success with his all-round brilliance as he chipped in with eight wickets and 164 runs in three matches. His performance also made him the player of the tournament award winner.

Following the maiden edition of the Champions Trophy in 1998, there were no player of the tournament award winners in the 2000 and 2002 installments of the tournament due to different reasons.

Champions Trophy 2004: Ramnaresh Sarwan

Ramnaresh Sarwan did a superb job with his bat to help the West Indies become the Champions Trophy 2004 winner. Appearing in four matches, he hit 166 runs with a couple of fifties and ended up as the second-leading run-getter in the competition. His excellent batting got him the player of the tournament award. 

Champions Trophy 2006: Chris Gayle

West Indies couldn’t defend their title in the 2006 Champions Trophy after losing to Australia in the final of the competition, but their stalwart Chris Gayle looked majestic as an all-rounder and received the player of the tournament award. He racked up 474 runs and eight wickets in eight games. 

Champions Trophy 2009: Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting led Australia from the front in the Champions Trophy 2009 and made Australia the only team to defend the title successfully in the illustrious ODI tournament. He scored 288 runs in five games at an amazing average of 72.00 and ended up as the leading run-getter in the competition. The veteran also became the recipient of the player of the tournament award.

Champions Trophy 2013: Shikhar Dhawan

As discussed above, Shikhar Dhawan made a crucial contribution in India’s sensational success in the Champions Trophy 2013 and became the player of the tournament. The left-handed batter struck 363 runs with a couple of tons and a fifty in five matches, and was the highest run-scorer in the ODI extravaganza held in England.

Champions Trophy 2017: Hasan Ali

Hasan Ali became the first bowler in history of the Champions Trophy to win the player of the tournament award with his breathtaking performance in the eighth installment of the ODI tournament. In Pakistan’s maiden title win, the pacer chipped in with 13 wickets in five outings at a frugal economy of 4.29.
