Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu went down to Wang Zhi Yi in the final of the 2024 Malaysia Masters Super 500 tournament. The two-time Olympic medalist registered a 21-16, 5-21, 16-21 defeat in the summit clash of the tournament on Sunday, May 26. This was Sindhu’s first BWF World Tour title since July 2022, when she took down the same opponent to clinch the Singapore Open title. Before this tournament, the former world champion had reached two quarterfinals of six tournaments she participated in.
After the match, Sindhu, who would aim for her third Olympic medal in Paris told the Indian Express, “It's sad that I didn't get the result that I expected. I think I should have pulled it off, maintaining the lead (in Game 3), but there were really good rallies and she also came back. And overall I can say that it is, it's been a very good match. I mean, it's a bit disappointing, but a lot of positives to take from this match and the whole tournament as well. I am happy that I least came to the finals. I played well, these matches will definitely give me a lot of confidence.”
The shuttler also said that she will take all the positives from the tournament and will prepare for the upcoming tournaments. Sindhu added, “After a long time, coming to the finals is a positive thing. It gives me a lot of confidence. Of course, I go back and see what improvements to be done and discuss with my coach. And of course prepare for Singapore, it's not just over with this tournament.”
The former world champion continued, “It's important to get back and maybe just a day off and then be prepared for the next tournament. It's important that you keep pumping up, you keep pushing yourself, you keep encouraging yourself in these low times. That's what I can do now at the moment. I mean, it is disappointing, but it is also important to just cheer myself up and, just focus and relax and prepare for the next tournament.”
