Rohit Sharma, the Indian Test captain, is reportedly expected to lead the national team in the upcoming five-match series against England in June in spite of a recent run of poor results under him. It is understood that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee will make the announcement regarding the final squad for the England Test tour during the final week of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 in late May.
Notably, Rohit Sharma had a disastrous Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series in Australia at the turn of the year, scoring only 31 runs in three matches before dropping himself for the fifth and final Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) this past January. The Indian cricket team ended up losing the BGT to Australia with a 1-3 scoreline, and the only Test victory in the series came under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy when Rohit Sharma wasn’t available due to personal reasons.

With such a run of tough results in Test cricket, there were rumours around Rohit Sharma leaving Test captaincy and announcing the retirement from the format, but after he led India to ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, the selectors are expected to continue with him as leader of the team in Tests. The PTI sources privy to the development said, “Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the India senior team in England despite his modest outings and two Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia.”
Moreover, there is an expectation surrounding few of the accomplished Indian players taking part in matches of the A team against the England Lions during the May and June window ahead of the five-match Test series. The first Test will start on June 20 at the Headingley in Leeds between hosts England and India, and the latter will be looking to clinch the series for the first-time against their highly accomplished opponents away from home since 2007.
