At the Asian Track Cycling Championship 2023 in Niali, Malaysia on Monday, Indian cyclist Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam took home the silver medal in the 1km individual time trial. Ronaldo Singh, aged 21, completed second in the time trial at the National Velodrome in a time of 1:00.863, barely behind Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis of Malaysia who clocked 1:00.559. Woorim Choi of the Republic of Korea won bronze by finishing in 1:01.541.

Ronaldo Singh beat his own previous record of 1:01.724 set last year to set a new national record for India in the 1km time trial. Notably, the Asian Track Cycling Championship in 2023 serves as a qualifying event for the Olympics, set to take place in Paris next year.

Ronaldo Singh earned his fourth overall medal and third individual medal at the Asian Championships in Malaysia. The Indian athlete took home a bronze medal in the same competition at the New Delhi-hosted edition in 2022. He also competed in the men's sprint team, which took home the bronze. India won its first-ever individual silver medal at the continental competition with Ronaldo Singh's silver in the men's sprint event.

Along with Ronaldo Singh, new national records were set by Vishwajit Singh in the men's 4000m individual pursuit, Meenakshi in the women's 3000m individual pursuit, and the Indian women's team in the 3000m pursuit.
