Former Sri Lankan cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne has been hospitalized after being involved in a road accident in Thrippane, Anuradhapura. After announcing retirement in 2023, Thirimanne is playing in the Legends Cricket Trophy for the Yuvraj Singh-led New York Strikers.
So far in the tournament, the top-order batter has been in scintillating form scoring 110 runs at a 189.66 strike rate which included a blistering 90 in 39 balls against the Delhi Devils. On the back of Thirimanne's stunning performances, the Superstar Strikers are on the LCT table with three wins out of four games.
Coming back to the accident, the Sri Lankan star has been admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital with minor injuries sustained in the accident as per local police. The authorities, further, mentioned that the car in which Thirimanne was travelling got into a collision with a lorry arriving from the opposite direction at around 07.45 a.m. on the morning of March 14. Local media reports also reveal that the three other individuals travelling in the car, the driver of the lorry and another person suffered injuries and are also hospitalized. Since the incident, New York Strikers also released a statement, as reported by NewsWire, confirming that Thirimanne is safe and is on his way to recovery.
The statement said, "We wish to inform you that Lahiru Thirimanne and his family were involved in a small car accident while visiting the temple. Thankfully, they have been admitted to the hospital for observation."
"Fortunately, following a thorough medical assessment, we can confirm that they are all safe and sound, with no cause for concern. We appreciate the outpouring of concern and support from everyone during this time. We kindly request respect for their privacy as they recover."
