On Saturday, September 28, New Zealand added mere 66 runs to their last night score of 22/2 before they were bundled out by the hosts, Sri Lanka in the first session of Day 3 in the ongoing second Test. After trailing the Test series 0-1, the Tim Southee-led side took on their counterparts intending to level the series after their loss in the first Test by 63 runs. However, the Lankans put up 602/5 before declaring the innings after electing to bat first in Galle.
The Kiwis, who have been struggling to get to their best, were once again reduced to 88/10 in 39.5 overs at the Galle International Stadium in Galle. The New Zealand batters put up a disappointing display of batting skills as the hosts proved lethal with the ball. While Tom Latham and Devon Conway were dismissed on Day 2, the likes of Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Darly Mitchell, among others could not get the scoreboard ticking as New Zealand were bundled out at the score of 88.
Seeing the Kiwis fall like a pack of cards, fans took to social media to hail the Sri Lankan bowlers, especially Prabath Jayasuriya’s six-fer along with maiden three-wicket haul for Nishan Peiris. Moreover, a few even slammed the visiting side for their poor show.

Notably, New Zealand’s 88 is now their lowest total in Test cricket in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, it is their fifth lowest total in Asia in the longest format of the game with their lowest being 62 against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2021.
