India Olympic wrestler has been granted a bail by the Delhi court after the 39-year-old was accused of murdering wrestler Sagar Dhankar. Advocate RS Malik, who represents Sushil Kumar has moved an interim bail application for three weeks on humanitarian  grounds to take care of his wife.

Notably, Sushil’s wife is set to undergo a surgery. His wife reportedly had to undergo urgent operation as she has been suffering from acute lower back pain. The two-time Olympic medallist has been lodged  in judicial custody since June 2 last year for the murder  of the junior national champion.

However, the court has granted bail to the Indian wrestler, directing Kumar to surrender before the jail superintendent on November 13.

" Keeping in view the medical condition of the wife of the accused and also considering the fact that there are two minor children, this court is of the view that the presence of the accused will be required,  and he is ordered to be released on interim bail till November 12, 2022, on his furnishing personal bond in the sum of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties in the like amount” , Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand said.

Sushil Kumar is the only Indian athlete to win two individual medals in Olympics (bronze in 2008 & silver in 2012) and also the only Indian wrestler to win a world championship title. He also has an Asian Games bronze  with four Asian Championships medals. The 39-year-old also has won three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.
