India’s rising wrestler Priya Malik became the second Indian woman to win a junior world championship. Malik w on gold at the 2023 U20 World Wrestling Champions in Jordan on Thursday, Augu st 17. This was India’s second gold at the ongoing championships. Before Priya, Antim Panghal had been the only Indian woman to win gold and earn the prestigious title, as she won gold in last year’s edition of the championship.
Priya took down her German rival Laura Celive Kuehn 5-0 in the 76kg gold medal bout. Apart from her, the former junior world champion, Antim Panghal made it to the final of the 53 kg category and is now only one step away from defending her title. In the finale, Panghal will lock horns with Ukraine's Mariia on August 18, Friday.
In addition to them, Phangal reached the final of the 65 kg category, where she will be up against Hungary’s Eniko. Not only this, but another woman wrestler Savita made it to the summit clash of the 62 kg category and reached the semifinal of the ongoing tournament.
Speaking of junior world champions, Priya became the sixth wrestler from India after Palwinder Cheema, Ramesh Kumar, Deepak Punia, Antim Panghal, and Mohit Kumar to win the yellow metal in the history of the U20 World Championships.
