Uzbekistan joined a new governing organisation with goal of continuing boxing at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Uzbekistan has been welcomed by World Boxing, a new regulatory organisation that aims to make sure the sport is included in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Notably, t he 33rd Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, California from 14 July to July 30, 2028. It will be the third time the city has hosted the Olympics Games, following 1932 and 1984.
The announcement for Uzbekistan’s new group mission i.e., keep continuing boxing at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles was made on November 3 during the World Boxing Association's 2024 meeting in Pueblo, Colorado. In May of this year, the two (Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan) held their first formal meeting signalling the start of formal collaboration and an Olympic future for boxing, something Boris van der Vorst heavily emphasised yesterday.
The addition of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan is a major coup for World Boxing: Officials
The Uzbekistan Boxing Federation, whose fighters won five of the 13 gold medals in Paris, is one of four new members welcomed into World Boxing, alongside Kazakhstan, Guatemala, and Laos. The officials welcomed Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan by calling it a major coup for World Boxing and said, "The addition of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, which are two of the world's leading boxing nations, is a major coup for World Boxing."
Not only this, but World Boxing president Boris van der Vorst said that the recruits “recognise it is the only way to keep the Olympic dreams of their boxers alive.” The addition of the new members took place at a meeting in Pueblo, Colorado which were the hosts of the World Boxing’s first global championships, at under-19 level. Notably, boxers from Uzbekistan went home with five of the 13 gold medals in Paris Olympics 2024.
