Former Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has countered the remarks Mohammad Hafeez and Rashid Latif who gave insulting remarks for the stars of the Pakistan cricket team during the 90s. Hafeez and Latif with a social media post. Hafeez had raised questions on the legacy of Pakistan’s 1990 and early 2000s players. Appearing in a cricket show on PTV Sports, Hafeez launched a scathing attack on former Pakistan stalwarts and remarked, "I am a huge fan of those who played in the 1990s but when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan. They didn't win an ICC event - they lost the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cups. We reached one final ( the 1999 World Cup) and lost that badly. As stars, as players, they were the mega superstars but then they couldn't inspire us by winning an ICC event.”
Following Hafeez, Rashid Latif had also taken a dig at Pakistan’s 90s superstars while having a conversation on the YouTube show "Caught Behind". However, he didn’t mention any names but targeted Waqar and Wasim indirectly. "Yeh Dubai ke laundon ne tabahi phela diya hai. Dono ek dusre ke taarifen kar kar ke khush ho rahe hai. Zindagi bhar ladte rahe, hume aag me phek diya aur...kamal log hai. Inke aage paisa phenko, yeh kuch bhi kardenge,” said Latif.
Reacting to the comments of both former Pakistan players, Waqar has posted an image of himself with his former colleague Wasim on X to reply to the remarks of both Pakistan formers. His caption read, “90’s KA LONDA, Test- 191, ODI’s- 618, Wkts-1705, Runs- 8594, 5 wkts- 66 10 wkts- 10.”
Pakistan formers are criticising their team for the miserable Champions Trophy 2025 campaign
Following Pakistan’s early Champions Trophy 2025 exit, their former players are coming heavily on their players. Besides Wasim and Waqar, Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, Sikander Bakht, and Mohammad Amir are some former Pakistan servants who are taking their team’s key stalwarts to the cleaners.
After Pakistan’s six-wicket defeat at the hands of India in Dubai, Akhtar called Babar Azam “a fraud” while Hafeez also remarked that the top-order batter has never won any matches for Pakistan against India. Amidst these scenes, Team Pakistan will endeavour to silence their critics with their performance in the white-ball series in New Zealand, which will begin on March 16.
