On Friday, July 12, the international career of James Anderson, one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, concluded after England defeated West Indies by an innings and 114 runs in the first Test at Lord’s in London. On the third day, the debutant Gus Atkinson picked up the final wicket of the match, following which James Anderson teared up on camera.
The moment happened after the completion of the 188th and final Test match of James Anderson’s international career, which led to an emotional send-off from the fans and teammates at Lord’s in London. Notably, in the second innings, James Anderson picked up three West Indies wickets, including the 704th and final Test career scalp on the third morning. The right-arm fast bowler nicked off Joshua Da Silva through to the wicket-keeper Jamie Smith, the other debutant in the Test match for England.
James Anderson, who picked up the most wickets in Test cricket among all the fast bowlers, bowled 350 innings in 188 Test matches, delivering over 40,000 balls. He ended his Test career with 704 wickets at an average of 26.45 and a strike rate of around 56 with 32 five-wicket hauls in an innings and three 10-wicket hauls in the match.
He finished his Test career in third place in the most wicket-takers list behind Shane Warne with 708 wickets and Muttiah Muralitharan with 800 wickets.
