During his latest interview, the former Indian cricketer, Gautam Gambhir, claimed that MS Dhoni is probably the most successful captain India will ever have. The 42-year-old, who is currently in the mentor role at Kolkata Knight Riders, was speaking to Star Sports in the build-up to his team’s match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Chennai Super Kings.

Apart from playing together for the Indian cricket team, winning multiple ICC trophies, MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir also faced off against each other multiple times in the IPL. The most famous battle in the franchise T20 league between them happened in the 2012 final, when Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Gautam Gambhir, got the better of MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings to win the trophy for his team for the first time.

In his interview with Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir alluded to the fact that while other captains might win a lot of Test matches, including overseas ones, their accomplishments will pale in comparison to MS Dhoni’s multiple ICC final victories. He said, “MS is probably the most successful captain India will ever have. I don't think anyone can ever reach that level, winning three ICC trophies. People can win overseas, people can win as many Test matches, but it cannot get bigger than three ICC trophies.”

Gautam Gambhir talks about enjoying IPL rivalry against MS Dhoni

After hailing MS Dhoni for his successes in ICC tournaments as the Indian captain, Gautam Gambhir talked about enjoying their rivalry in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former Indian cricketer also pointed out the tactical mindset of MS Dhoni, especially in utilising the spinners to the max, which propelled his teams to winning trophies at IPL and international levels.

"In the IPL, I enjoyed every bit of it because I knew that MS had that tactical mindset. He was very good tactically, knew how to control the spinners, knew how to set the field against the spinners, and probably would never give up as well. He batted at No. 6 or 7 and knew that till the time he is there, he can finish off the game, even if he needed 20 runs in one over," Gautam Gambhir said.
