During the Group A clash in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, a controversial moment happened after Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur successfully ran out New Zealand batter Amelia Kerr at the striker’s end. As Harmanpreet Kaur started to celebrate the wicket, Amelia Kerr, who was walking back to the pavilion, got stopped in her tracks by the fourth umpire after being notified by the on-field umpire about the over being completed before she was run out, leading to a protest from the Indian captain and the coaching staff.

Notably, the moment happened on the last ball of the 14th over from Deepti Sharma as Amelia Kerr stroked it towards the deep cover region towards Harmanpreet Kaur before taking off for a run alongside her partner Sophie Devine. While the on-field umpire gave Deepti Sharma her cap to signify that the over was completed, both the batters and Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t realise the situation before Amelia Kerr was found short of the crease as Richa Ghosh dislodged the bails.

Amol Mazumdar was spotted having animated discussion with fourth umpire outside the field

But, a few seconds later, the on-field umpire called the remainder of the play after her call for the completion of the over as a dead ball, which meant that Amelia Kerr managed to survive the controversial run out moment. There was a lengthy delay in play after the umpire managed to get her decision right as Harmanpreet Kaur and Amol Mazumdar protested the decision of the umpires.

While the social media seemed quite divided on whether Amelia Kerr was out or not out in the Women’s World Cup 2024 match between India and New Zealand, Ravichandran Ashwin also pointed out the fact that the umpire had called for the over before the dismissal was executed. He was quoted as saying on the social media platform X, “The over was called before the start of the second run. Whose fault is this really?”

Moreover, New Zealand managed to score 160/4 in their allotted overs, a formidable score on the board for India to chase down, to start their Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a winning note. After Amelia Kerr was dismissed for 13 off 22, Sophie Devine got past her fifty, and stayed unbeaten to help her team reach a strong position.
