Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka spoke in an exclusive interview with former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra about what the opening pair of the team might look like during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The 63-year-old hinted at the prospect of Rishabh Pant taking the responsibility of opening the innings for LSG alongside Aiden Markram or Mitchell Marsh because of the dearth of options at the top of the order.
Following the IPL auction last month in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which saw LSG team management build a squad of 24 players, there were a lot of questions raised about who will open for the team because they had picked only one recognised opening option in Aiden Markram. The likes of Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant have opened the batting in T20 cricket in different stages of their careers, but they haven’t quite been a regular feature there.
Options are to open with Markram and Marsh, Marsh and Rishabh, or Markram and Rishabh: Sanjiv Goenka
In response to the question about LSG’s opening combination for the IPL 2025 season, Sanjiv Goenka name dropped a few top players as options, but at the same time, he remarked that the final decision is going to be taken by the coaching staff. He was quoted as saying, as per the Times of India, “Options are to open with Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh, Marsh and Rishabh Pant, or Markram and Rishabh.”
“Now that is a call they have to take whether Rishabh will come at No. 3 or No. 2. Those are calls that frankly are beyond my capability and competence,” Sanjiv Goenka further said during the exclusive interview with Aakash Chopra on YouTube. The LSG owner also stated that they were quite good in building their squad at the IPL auction last month, which made him feel that their number three to eight are very strong.
Moreover, Sanjiv Goenka also revealed that they are looking to announce the new captain of LSG in the next few days after the departure of KL Rahul to Delhi Capitals.
