Luis Diaz’s father Luis Manuel moved to tears as his son scored twice for Colombia to hand them a famous win by 2-1 against Brazil in the CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 Qualifier at the Estadio Metropolitano in Barranquilla. The 26-year-old had united with his father a couple of days ago after the latter was released by ELN rebels in Colombia, who had held him hostage for 12 days.

Brazil opened the scoring against Colombia in the fourth minute of the contest when Gabriel Martinelli scored a goal from Vinicius Jr's beautiful first-touch pass. But, apart from this moment, the Brazilians didn’t have many shots on target against a very resolute Colombian outfit, who were very impressive on the counterattacks.

Luis Diaz was in the thick of the action for Colombia, creating 10 shots on target on his own, but he was denied by his Liverpool teammate Alisson in goal. Ultimately, it was the mistakes from the Brazilian defence which allowed him to put two headers in the back of the net in the 75th and 79th minutes.
