In what is supposedly an advertisement shoot for Goibibo, Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant was seen recreating a viral incident on screen related to himself. During the shoot of one of the scenes of this promotional video, Pant can be seen shouting the phrase, ‘stupid, stupid, stupid’ referring to the incident that took place in the commentary box during one of the test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. During the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Sunil Gavaskar criticized Rishabh Pant for his shot selection leading to his dismissal. Pant attempted an unorthodox lap shot off Scott Boland but was caught by Nathan Lyon, contributing to India's batting collapse.
Notably, Sunil Gavaskar expressed his frustration during commentary, labeling the shot as "stupid" and reiterated this by furiously shouting ‘stupid, stupid, stupid’ thrice in the commentary box. His raw and strong reaction caught everyone by surprise including his co-commentator Harsha Bhogle, who was visibly startled by his reaction. Sunil Gavaskar went on to further criticize Rishabh Pant for his poor shot selection, especially in the situation that the Indian team was in.
That is throwing away your wicket: Gavaskar lashes out at Rishabh Pant
The Australian side had scored 474 in the first innings and was trailing by 283 runs when Rishabh Pant got dismissed. Gavaskar stressed the importance of understanding the match situation and adapting one's natural game accordingly.
The former Indian captain further elaborated that while Pant has played remarkable innings in the past, relying solely on aggressive shots isn't always effective, especially in challenging conditions like those in Australia. He highlighted that Test cricket demands respect and careful shot selection, particularly when the team is under pressure.
While the result of the boxing day test match did not go in favour of the Indian team, one positive for the Men in Blue was the maiden test century of youngster Nitish Kumar Reddy, who scored 114 in the first innings.
