Venkatesh Iyer, the rising star of Indian cricket, has resumed bowling after recovering from a shoulder injury that kept him out of action for two months. The 28-year-old all-rounder was seen training with KL Rahul at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Since January 2022, he has been out of the India squad and is trying to forge his way back after a tough year.

A freak ankle injury during last year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy forced him out of most of the domestic season before he had a decent 2023 Indian Premier League season for Kolkata Knight Riders, the highlight of which was the century he scored against Mumbai Indians. However, Iyer was still not bowling to prevent re-aggravating his injuries, but now he has started to bowl in the nets again. The medium pacer was seen bowling to KL Rahul, who is also coming back from a serious injury, in the NCA nets.

Iyer is on standby for the Asian Games but has still said that it's not a comeback. The all-rounder still has to work harder and work his way back into the squad. India too needs a fast bowling allrounder as a backup to Hardik Pandya, who is prone to injuries, and the fact that Iyer is a left-handed batter adds to his advantage.

Talking about his fitness Iyer said, “I was not 100 per cent before the IPL, but I am back on track. It is easier to bowl 10 overs in nets, but in matches, after fielding for 30 overs, to bowl six to seven overs when your legs are sore is the perfect way to build volume, which helps me get the rhythm back.”
