In one of the most dull Manchester derbies in quite some time, United and City played out a 0-0 draw in the Premier League at the Old Trafford on Sunday, April 6, which showed the need for change in personnel for both teams in the summer. After the conclusion of the match, Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United manager, spoke about how they are fighting for their lives, wanting to show their fans the effort and commitment to get better as a unit.
During the uninspiring Manchester derby, the best chances for City were created by Omar Marmoush, but he wasn’t able to put the ball past goalkeeper Andre Onana in the back of the net. For United, Alejandro Garnacho had a half-a-chance, but he was neutralised by Ruben Dias before substitute Joshua Zirkzee turned a cross from Patrick Dorgu towards goal in the second half, but goalkeeper Ederson saved it relatively comfortably.
In the post-match, when a journalist spoke about how the Manchester United players are fighting for each other with every performance, manager Ruben Amorim was in the affirmative before saying, “We have to do that because we are fighting for our lives and we want to show our fans. We know we talk about that before the game, that is really important. We can play bad but the character has to be there and today it was there.”
Manchester United are languishing in 13th place in Premier League points table
With the draw at home against the city rivals, Manchester United jumped ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in 13th place in the Premier League points table with 38 points in 31 matches, while Manchester City stayed in fifth place with 52 points in the same number of matches. While United are battling to keep themselves ahead of the fellow struggling teams in the bottom half of the table, City are firmly embroiled in a battle to secure top four with Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa.
In their next match, Manchester United will be going to Parc Olympique Lyonnais to take on Lyon in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-finals tie on Thursday, April 10.
